I've decided to shut down Necrotic Tissue. There are a lot of reasons, but the main one is financial. I've always known that NT would never be a huge moneymaker, but I did hope that I could at least make it self-sustaining. It hasn't, and I can't continue to take the loss.
Stygian Publications, which is my publishing company, will remain open and I still plan on doing one or two projects a year.
I want to thank everyone that has supported NT over the years by sending us stories and buying subscriptions. Despite the fact that I couldn't reach the financial goal, I don't feel that NT failed. It is an excellent product and I am immensely proud of the issues we've put out.
I've decided to end NT with the upcoming issue #14, coming out in April. All of the writers that submitted stories to us in January will be getting them back. I only made the decision last week, and I'm sorry I held on to those stories. I hope those writers will find other homes for them.
I am considering putting out a Best of Necrotic Tissue later in the year. It isn't a done deal, but if the writers want to be a part of it, I would like to put it out.
Unlike other magazine closings I've seen in the past, all the writers will get paid and get their contributor copies. All of the subscribers are also going to get a refund for issues they haven't received. It may take me until May to get all the subscribers their money back, but they will all get refunds.
Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to share your stories and make something that brought me so much joy.
Scott…

ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer, Scott! I'll be missing my bi-monthly digest. :(
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about NT's demise. Hopefully an anthology does come up in the cards later on, because there were some very good stories in NT's pages.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the work you put into it, and best of luck going forward.
ReplyDeleteI'm honored to have been a part of Necrotic Tissue. It will be one of those mags we talk about in 10...20 years with fondness. Thanks for all the hard work.
ReplyDeleteShame to see it go. It was a great magazine, and had plenty of respect going for it. Best of luck with whatever comes next.

ReplyDeleteCan't thank you enough for all the work that you did and for giving folks like me a chance. I'll be proud always to have appeared in your magazine.
ReplyDeleteScott, NT is a fine mag and will be missed. Thank you for 14 wonderful issues of Necrotic Tissue.
ReplyDeleteThis sucks major everything! You have your reasons which are hard ones to make under these tough financial times. And you know best. I look forward to what comes next from Stygian. And as always...if you need any help you know how to reach me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to say, Scott. This is very sad news. I'll treasure my t-shirt always.

Aw, Scott... You know I love NT, but you've got to do what you've got to do. Don't leave the door locked though, man. Keep a key hidden away somewhere, just in case.
ReplyDeleteI've been honored and blessed to have been part of NT. Thank you for everything you've done, and be proud!
J.
Sorry to hear it Scott. It is a class magazine.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you are closing NT. I know it was such a passion for you and only a handful will ever truly experience. Hopefully one day in the future it will resurface in another format.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this sad news Scott.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear this. Thanks for all your hard work and best luck in your new endeavors.
ReplyDeleteI'm so, so sorry to hear it--NT has been a big part of my reading for years now, and I'll miss it greatly.
ReplyDeleteYou've accomplished a lot with it, and left a great mark on the community and the authors and readers you helped.
Necrotic Tissue is a gem, Scott. Very sorry to see it go, but kudos on a work of uncompromising quality and long live Stygian!
ReplyDeleteIt's the end of an era. Nectrotic Tissue was my first sale. It'll always be close to my heart.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this, Scott, but I understand your reasons. Respect due, for refunding subscriptions. It's ridiculous how many publishers don't do that when they close shop. Good luck in all your future works.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Ed
Sad to see NT go away. Thank you for many great issues, including me in one, and your tireless effort. Best in all things going forward.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Andrew
Too bad, I had just discovered your magazine and I liked it a lot. Targeted it for an eventual publication.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, good luck in your future endeavors. Will keep myself update through the RSS
That's a damn shame - especially since you were one of the first people to publish something of mine - but it can't be easy keeping something like NT going. I'll always treasure my T shirt - I was showing it off to someone only the other day :)
ReplyDeleteDamn! Didn't see this coming, but I understand completely. I'm proud to be inculded in the final issue. I bought and enjoyed every issue of NT and will miss the magazine dearly.
ReplyDeleteSo sad, but you're going out as classy as always, Scott. I'll treasure my NT t-shirt even more now. All the best in all you do!
ReplyDeleteBest to you, Scott, and I am glad Stygian will continue - I am proud to have been necrotic!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear this! Trista and I will miss the magazine quite a bit. You put out a slick product with some quality content. :(
ReplyDeleteSorry to see NC go. I made the shortlist for the next issue on my first submission to the mag and was waiting to find out if it went all the way through, lol. Break a leg in your next endeavors.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your kind words and support.
ReplyDeleteScott, This is devastating news! I think I speak for everyone when I say that the horror writing community won’t be the same without NT. The professionalism with witch you treated the authors who submitted their work and the contributors that were lucky enough to be a part of an issue was unparalleled in the industry. Writers talk to each other, and the chatter among writers in the community regarding NT was always positive. New writers really appreciate being treated with the same respect as writers that have been around the block a few times. NT was one of the only markets where a budding writer could count on that respect. Major newspapers and magazines are having a tough time staying afloat these days. I can only imagine that a small-print publication has an even tougher time. Have you considered going back to an electronic edition of NT? An e-reader version maybe? I’m grasping at straws but I just hate to see it go. I am super happy to hear that Stygian will still be alive and kicking! If there’s a silver lining, I suppose that’s it. Anyway, thanks again for all you did with NT! Best of luck with all your future endeavors!
ReplyDeleteLike everyone here, I'll be sad to see Necrotic Tissue go, there are so few really good horror markets out there. I do hope you go ahead with the "best of", if you do and you're interested in using Caretaker in the Garden of Dreams for it then just let me know.
ReplyDeleteDon't you dare refund any subscription monies to me. I hope others feel the same. NC is a success in anyone's eyes, a professional publication that sets a standard to be emulated.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see so many in support of you, Scott, and your creative talents.
A sad, sad day. Necrotic Tissue was a quality product to be proud of. I know it was a dreadfully tough decision, Scott, and you have my respect and condolences. All the best in your future endeavors, my friend!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how I didn't see this sooner! I have every print issue, and I love every single one. I'm sad to see Necrotic Tissue closing down, but hope to see more quality material from Stygian Publications in the future. Best of luck to you, Scott!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear it. You put out a great product.
